Hurt
A poem about being numb.
This song is inspired by Nine Inch Nails’s “Hurt,” specifically about being past the point of feeling and being desperate to experience some sensation.
Dripping blood that leaves no stain The cut, it caused no pain The weight of tears behind my eyes Burden, push, and strain The flesh is cold as rotten bone No pleasure have I known My throne is dirt and lies In a room of many, I am lost, alone There is no voice inside my head Of madness, violence, dread All is somber lightless skies The quiet past death, this path has lead I cut and bruise and bite myself To try and conjure some response To make myself hurt For all else is hollow

The emptiness in this feels heavier than the pain itself. That final need to “conjure some response” is what stayed with me — the desperation of wanting any feeling at all, even if it hurts. You captured that numbness with real force.
